In 2026, the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) proudly marks its 75th anniversary, a historic milestone celebrating decades of advocacy, progress, and global unity within the deaf community.
Since its founding, WFD has worked tirelessly to promote the human rights of Deaf people worldwide, strengthen national associations, and advance the recognition of sign languages. This anniversary is not only a moment to reflect on these achievements, but also an opportunity to look ahead and continue building a more inclusive future.
To commemorate this important occasion, several celebrations and events will take place throughout the year, bringing together Deaf communities, partners, and allies from across the globe.
Two-day Conference in Rome, Italy
The highlight of these celebrations will be a two-day conference held on 24–25 September 2026 in Rome, Italy. Under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” this event will gather leaders, experts, and community members to to reflect on past achievements, address present challenges, and shape a future where the human rights of deaf people are fully recognised and upheld. We will also gather for a gala on the 25th of September, followed by a march and a festival on the 26th.
