In 2026, the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) proudly marks its 75th anniversary, a historic milestone celebrating decades of advocacy, progress, and global unity within the deaf community.
Since its founding, WFD has worked tirelessly to promote the human rights of Deaf people worldwide, strengthen national associations, and advance the recognition of sign languages. This anniversary is not only a moment to reflect on these achievements, but also an opportunity to look ahead and continue building a more inclusive future.
To commemorate this important occasion, several celebrations and events will take place throughout the year, bringing together Deaf communities, partners, and allies from across the globe.
Two-day Conference in Rome, Italy
The highlight of these celebrations will be a two-day conference held on 24–25 September 2026 in Rome, Italy. Under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” this event will gather leaders, experts, and community members to to reflect on past achievements, address present challenges, and shape a future where the human rights of deaf people are fully recognised and upheld. We will also gather for a gala on the 25th of September, followed by a march and a festival on the 26th.
WFD Sign Name Competition
Deaf communities, as part of our culture, have always given sign names to people, places and organisations. For 75 years the World Federation of the Deaf has had a three part sign name: World Federation of the Deaf.
As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we see many organisations have a sign name with one sign, and many have asked us about a similar sign for the WFD. The sign ‘WFD’ is our history. But we are open to new ideas to fit new times.
Today, we are launching a global competition to create a new official sign name for the WFD. Any WFD Member, individual or organisational, can propose a sign name.
The deadline to submit is 30 April 2026. The selected sign name will be announced on 25 September 2026, during our 75th Anniversary celebrations in Rome, Italy.
