Japanese Sign Language officially recognised

After 20 years of advocacy and approval, Japan has passed a law recognising Japanese Sign Language. All 1,741 local municipal councils across Japan have adopted the law.
Japan has just recognised a law for sign language. The procedure involved securing approval from all 1,741 local municipal councils for the Japanese Sign Language Act. After these approvals, the law was submitted to the national government. Following five years of advocacy, the law was passed.

The World Federation of the Deaf congratulates the Japanese Federation of the Deaf and Deaf communities across Japan for this successful achievement after 20 years of efforts toward recognition. This recognition will help strengthen the fundamental rights of deaf people.
