Mr Colin Allen, President of the WFD, and Mr Stanislav Ivanov, President of Deaf Skills Association (DSIA), represented their organisations to sign a Letter of Support in Kazan, Russia Federation, on 28 April 2017.

The Letter of Support states the WFD and DSIA’s joint commitment to demonstrate the skills of deaf people and promote their right to work on an equal basis, in adherence to Article 27 (Work and Employment) of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability.

Founded in 2015, the DSIA is a non-profit international federation that promotes deaf skills excellence and development, recognising its importance in achieving economic growth and personal success.

The DSIA represents 34 professions in seven member countries. Through international cooperation and development between industries, governments, organisations, and institutions, the DSIA promotes deaf skills through education and training, skills competitions, and knowledge exchange. The DSIA’s core work is in conducting Professional Skills Competitions and promoting these as a movement.

Mr Allen had the honour to witness the First Demonstration Championship of Deaf Skills International which was held in Kazan, Russia, from 29 to 30 April 2017. The competition showcased 10 different crafts and hosted more than 65 deaf youth participants.

Mr Allen commented, ‘It is inspiring to see the deaf participants showcasing their skills with confidence. Such an event is a stepping stone towards the involvement of deaf participants in WorldSkills.’

Akin to the Deaflympics as a parallel to the Olympics, DeafSkills mirrors the WorldSkills. Such international competitions are the most effective platforms to motivate deaf youths to choose suitable careers and enhance their professional skills and employability.
