Dr Lovászy from Hungary elected to the CRPD Committee

World Federation is pleased to congratulate Dr László Gábor Lovászy from Hungary on his election to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The election took place on Wednesday at the Fifth session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COP5) held in New York,USA where Dr Lovászy stood for election along with 21 other candidates. The Committee consists of 18 independent disability rights experts from all over the world.

Dr Lovászy is the first hard of hearing Committee member ever to join the CRPD Committee. Dr Lovászy has a wide experience and knowledge in disability and human rights law and has established close relationship with the deaf community. He has a strong understanding of sign language and deaf rights and WFD looks forward to working with Dr Lovászy and other members of the Committee to ensure the full implementation of the UN CRPD articles dealing with sign language and deaf culture.

WFD President Mr Colin Allen has invited Dr Lovászy to join the Board’s next meeting in Geneva, Switzerland in November.
