Every year on 3rd March 2021, World Hearing Day (WHD) is celebrated. The theme for WHD 2021 is “Hearing Care for All! Screen. Rehabilitate. Communicate.” Communication and Language is important for deaf people, so the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is supporting this message and is saying “On World Hearing Day, Let’s Remember to Sign!”

This year,  the World Health Organisation (WHO) launches the first ever World Report on Hearing. The World Report has been 4 years in making. The WFD has been involved in this report through providing data and research and providing feedback to the report through numerous meetings with WHO and other stakeholders in Geneva, Switzerland. We would like to share four important key takeaways from this report:

  • Early intervention: Language deprivation
  • Community involvement: Deaf organizations
  • Language and Communication: Access
  • Holistic approach: Families and children
