The WFD is pleased to note the participation of deaf people in the DPO delegations to the CRPD Committee. Jenny Nilsson, known to us as the President of the WFDYS, is in Geneva as a represenative of the Swedish Deaf Association and participating in the Swedish DPO Umbrella Organization. Kamran Abasov of Azerbaijan also testified as part of the Azerbaijan DPO delegation. Abasov noted with concern the lack of professional sign language interpreter standards and the need for sign language based education for deaf children. The WFD strongly encourages Deaf Associations to join their DPO delegations to the CRPD Committee. This will allow the Committee to learn about deaf people’s human rights issues directly from deaf people ourselves. The WFD also had a meeting with Adwoa Kufuor at OHCHR to discuss cooperation on issues related to deaf women.
